Chill vibes and friendly service! Grabbed a pineapple mango smoothie and a ham and cheese croissant the smoothie was super refreshing and hit the spot. Will definitely be back!

I was looking for a good bagel shop and this place, nestled away, caught my eye while I was on a walk. From the moment i stepped in the door, about 4 months ago, until today I have been met with unmatched service and deliciously consistent food. K2 and James are wonderful, full of life, human-beings and were eager to allow me to have a small family get together here with my family for my birthday. I hope you can also enjoy Merritt station cafe just as much as i have!

This is my go-to cafe in Oakland. I am very particular about my coffee, and I go here most every day with my dog, Finn. Best coffee around (and I have tried most of the other coffee purveyors in the area) and a great food selection! Like the previous owners, the new ones are very service oriented and super friendly. They greet me and Finn by name, always with a genuine smile, and are quick to accommodate all their customers. My cappuccino comes consistently just the way I like it. I always feel welcome and valued. I highly recommend. Tom H.

The friendly sfaff greets it's regulars and often remembers their orders. People hang out here to use the free Wi-Fi and enjoy the wonderful coffees, teas, and smoothies as well as the wonderful made-to-order sandwiches. Good food, excellent staff, great location. You can also eat outside and look across to the park, library, and lake.

TL;DR: Wi-Fi, outlets, seating. Easygoing atmosphere and yummy drinks. Open early and closes later than most cafes. AMBIANCE Merritt Station Cafe is in a beautiful little spot near the lake. There are couches in a little alcove in the back perfect for a group chat or hangout and thick wood tables at the front perfect for working. There is Wi-Fi, plenty of outlets, and it was relatively easy to get seating when I popped in around noon. Despite being near the street, it was relatively quiet. Additionally, they weren't playing music so I do recommend bringing a pair of headphones if you prefer to work in a noisier environment. SERVICE The service here is really friendly and kind. I ordered a chai latte and went to sit down and the server brought me my order even though I was willing to pick it up and they had to walk around a long bar to bring it to me. A few regulars filtered in and the baristas knew their orders even before they ordered which I found charming. FOOD The chai latte was delicious, I wish I'd ordered a larger size. The sandwich was also pretty good and I love that it came with a pepper and pickles on the side. All of it was very reasonably priced.

Located near Lake Merritt on Grand Avenue. Enjoyed a freshly made breakfast bagel sandwich with an extra foamy and subtly sweet chai latte by the lake. The interior is a bit lacking of decor but spacious and tables are socially distanced. Service was friendly and helpful. Great place to stop by for a quick grab and go breakfast and enjoy a walk at Lake Merritt.

Merritt Station Cafe

Merritt Station Cafe at 614 Grand Ave Ste 1A in Oakland is where locals find comfort in warm plates, good coffee, and the kind of casual atmosphere that makes any day feel just a little better. Whether you're craving a hearty breakfast, a quick lunch, or just need a familiar corner to sit and enjoy a bite, this spot continues to pop up in countless reviews for all the right reasons.

The local charm of Merritt Station Cafe that keeps diners coming back

There's something unmistakably genuine about Merritt Station Cafe. From the moment you walk into this cozy neighborhood diner, you're welcomed by the scent of sizzling bacon, buttery toast, and fresh-brewed coffee. The space is snug and simple, yet filled with personality—artwork from local creators lines the walls, and the morning crowd feels like an extended family reunion.

Regulars often talk about the classic American breakfast lineup: fluffy pancakes stacked high, eggs just the way you like them, and crispy hash browns that taste like they’ve been perfected over generations. But beyond the staples, Merritt Station Cafe surprises with thoughtful daily specials that often nod to seasonal ingredients or customer favorites.

For many in Oakland, this isn’t just another breakfast joint—it’s part of the daily rhythm. It’s where students cram before exams, where retirees sip slowly and chat over omelets, and where couples catch up over weekend brunch. One loyal customer shared, “I’ve tried other cafes around the lake, but Merritt Station always feels like home.”

A menu built around comfort, quality, and just enough surprise

The menu at Merritt Station Cafe doesn’t try to be trendy for the sake of it—it’s rooted in comfort. Think homemade biscuits with sausage gravy, French toast that’s golden on the outside and custardy on the inside, and generous breakfast burritos that don’t skimp on the good stuff.

But it's not all breakfast, all the time. The lunch offerings include hearty sandwiches like turkey melts, BLTs, and tuna salad served on perfectly grilled sourdough. There’s also a rotation of soups and salads—nothing overly fussy, just honest, satisfying meals that hit the spot.

Behind the counter, you’ll find a team that cares. The staff knows the menu like the back of their hand and often has a recommendation if you can’t decide. Many ingredients are locally sourced, especially produce and bread, which adds a layer of freshness you can taste. And for those with dietary needs, they’re happy to customize—vegetarian, gluten-free, or lightened-up versions are just a polite ask away.

Surrounded by local flavor and a community that supports it

Merritt Station Cafe doesn’t just serve food—it serves the Oakland community. Its location on Grand Avenue, close to Lake Merritt, makes it easy to pop in before a walk or after a weekend farmers market stroll. The proximity to the Lakeshore and Adams Point neighborhoods means it’s accessible for locals from all directions, and there's plenty of foot traffic from nearby businesses and apartments.

There’s a visible sense of community here. The cafe supports local events, sometimes displays flyers for nearby happenings, and has even hosted small art showings and fundraisers. This isn’t just a place to eat—it’s where people gather, talk, and reconnect.

For new visitors, that sense of connection is felt instantly. It’s in the way the staff remembers names and drink orders, or how a stranger might share their newspaper with you. It’s the little things that make this more than a stop—it becomes a ritual.

What diners are saying and why their words matter

A quick glance through online reviews reveals consistent praise for the friendly service, portion sizes, and consistency in flavor. On platforms like Yelp and Google, Merritt Station Cafe often garners four to five stars, with diners mentioning their go-to orders and calling out staff by name.

One reviewer wrote: “Every time I visit, it’s like stepping into my own kitchen—only with better coffee and way fewer dishes.” Another highlighted the turkey avocado sandwich as “easily one of the best in town”, while others note how dependable the cafe is for group breakfasts or workday lunch breaks.

Visitors from out of town also find their way in, often discovering the place thanks to its warm word-of-mouth reputation. Given its central location in Oakland, it’s become a recommendation staple among locals hosting out-of-town friends who want something “authentic.”

And even when there's a bit of a wait during peak hours, most guests agree—it’s worth it. The combination of fresh food, local spirit, and unpretentious comfort has helped Merritt Station Cafe earn its place not just in guidebooks, but in people’s routines.

Whether you’re a longtime regular or someone discovering it for the first time, there’s something grounding about a place like this. Merritt Station Cafe isn’t trying to be the flashiest diner in town—it just wants to get the basics right, every single time. And that, in Oakland’s ever-evolving food scene, is a recipe that never goes out of style.
